Research Assistant in GIS Landscape Analysis

Faculty of Computing, Engineering & Sciences

Location: Staffordshire University, Stoke campus
Salary: £22,020 to £25,504 per annum
Tenure: Full time Fixed Term until 31 August 2014 in the first instance
Interview Date: See below
Reference: CES12-27

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Research Assistant in Geography, to support a high profile research programme which is monitoring change in the Welsh countryside. You will undertake GIS processing and analysis to support the research activities of Dr Ruth Swetnam in quantifying the quality of Welsh landscapes. Specifically, you will be responsible for spatial data management of a large number of survey sites, construction of 3D landscapes, calculation of viewsheds and other landscape quality measures.

We require someone with an undergraduate degree in Geography, Environmental Science or allied disciplines (2.1 / 1st) and strong preference will be given to candidates with an additional MSc in GIS, or in a discipline with a strong GIS component. Working knowledge of ArcGIS is an essential requisite for this role and ideally we would like candidates with an interest in landscape, land-use and rural issues. Applicants should be highly motivated, organised and keen to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

The post offers a unique opportunity to develop your experience of using GIS to interrogate landscape data and develop innovative methods for landscape research. This full-time post is based in the new Science Centre on the Stoke-on-Trent campus, and will be fixed term until 31 August 2014 in the first instance.

It is anticipated that interviews will be held during week commencing 3 June 2013.
