Groups and Committees > Map Design Group

Well designed maps are critically important to many areas of the economy and our society; from navigation and resource management, to education and tourism. The Map Design Group (MDG) of the British Cartographic Society is the forum for discussion and exchange of ideas on the principles of good cartographic design. We are concerned with identifying, developing and promoting good practice across all areas of map and related graphic design. We are dedicated to exploring cutting-edge issues related to design across the cartographic industry and associated map producers, publishers and users.

The group meets annually at the BCS Symposium, where we run workshops and other activities, and contribute to the programme of talks. We are keen to develop activities throughout the year by coordinating both national and local meetings and events in cooperation with our members

The newly appointed conveners are keen to hear from prospective members.

Please message Peter and Alexander to join us.

Membership is open to all those interested in map design. BCS membership is preferable but not essential. We would also be keen to hear from you if you are interested in organising a local event/workshop, or being involved in steering the general development of the MDG.

* Co-conveners: Prof. Peter Vujakovic and Dr. Alex Kent

* Objectives
  • Promote best practice in cartographic and related graphic design.
  • Provide a forum for discussion and debate on a wide range of design issues, open to a wide membership within and beyond the traditional cartographic community.
  • Encourage research and scholarly debate in both the history of cartographic design and contemporary practice and application.
  • Disseminate and publish material arising from the above objectives.
