GOOGLE SPONSORED ELECTION MAP AWARD AND ESRI UK SPONSORED NEW MAPMAKER AWARD STILL OPEN UNTIL JUNE/JULY 2015 RESPECTIVELY

NEW FOR 2015
The Google Award for mapping of the UK General Election 2015 results
We are pleased to announce a one-off award for 2015 to recognise one of the most mapped events of the year. This award will be given to the product that most accurately and clearly represents the results of the UK General Election 2015. Although entries will be accepted in hardcopy format, preference will be given to online mapping. The Award comprises a trophy, £250 prize and a certificate and is being run by The British Cartographic Society with the support of Google.
As this is a one-off award it will not be eligible for consideration for the overall BCS Award. Closing date 30th June 2015

The Stanfords Award for Printed Mapping
This award is open to any mapping in the printed form, whether it be a poster, folded sheet map, atlas or page from a book etc. The award comprises a trophy and a certificate and is being run by The British Cartographic Society with the support of Stanfords Map Shop.

The Avenza Award for Electronic Mapping
This award is open to any mapping available in electronic format, whether it is interactive internet mapping, internal company use GIS mapping or maybe a Powerpoint presentation. The award comprises a trophy and a certificate and is being run by The British Cartographic Society with the support of Avenza.

The John C. Bartholomew Award for Thematic Mapping
This award is presented for originality and excellence in the field of thematic (non-topographic) cartography with emphasis on effective communication of the intended theme or themes.
Traditionally this award has been given for originality and excellence in the field of small scale thematic cartography. In 2015, however, we opened up the award to thematic cartography at any scale, and delivered via any medium.
The award comprises a trophy, £500 prize and a certificate and is being run by The British Cartographic Society with the support of Collins Bartholomew and the Bartholomews family.

The Ordnance Survey OpenData Award
note: The format of the Ordnance Survey Open Data Award was changed in 2013.
Ordnance Survey have provided the British Cartographic Society (BCS) with an award to encourage excellence in cartographic design and the innovative and exciting use of OS OpenData. The award will be made annually or exceptionally at other times as may be determined by the Council of BCS. It will be given for the most outstanding cartographic use of OS OpenData presented for consideration. Entries will be considered by a panel of judges from Ordnance Survey. The panel will judge the entries on their innovative use of OS OpenData, fitness of the mapping for the declared purpose and the overall cartographic quality and design.
The winning entry will be announced at the Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the BCS Symposium each year. The award comprises a crystal trophy and a framed certificate both to be retained by the winner. Ordnance Survey will also present the winner with a prize (see the BCS News for details nearer the time.) The winning entry will also be put forward for The BCS Award. Those commended will receive a framed certificate.

STUDENT AWARDS

The ESRI UK Award for New Mapmakers
This award is open to those people who have been engaged in the preparation of maps for up to two years, including college students and new employees in commercial firms or government. Mapping can utilise Cartography, Geomatics, and/or GIS. The award comprises a prize, certificate and the BCS will pay for one years membership to the society. The award is being run by The British Cartographic Society with the support of ESRI UK.

The BCS Children’s Map Competition sponsored by the UKHO
This competition is run every other year and is to encourage the creative representation, by children aged 7-16, of their environment in graphic form.
The competition provides a £50 prize and certificate for each age group. The award is being run by The British Cartographic Society with the support of the UK Hydrographic Office.
The competition will next be run in 2016.
