Alex is co-convenor fo the BCS Design Group, Assistant Editor of The Cartographic Journal and Editor of the Bulletin of the Society of Cartographers.
After taking degrees at Oxford Brookes University and Queens’ College, Cambridge, his career has involved lecturing in GIS and Remote Sensing at Oxford Brookes, and Cartography at Canterbury Christ Church University and acting as an independent consultant on a variety of geospatial projects. These range from cartographic editing, design and production for An Atlas of the Social and Intellectual History of Islam at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies to building a GIS for Action Contrè la Faim in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
His PhD, An Analysis of the Cartographic Language of European State Topographic Maps, was gained under the supervision of Prof. Peter Vujakovic and won the National Geographic Society’s New Mapmaker Award in 2007.
Alex is a Senior Lecturer with the Geographical and Life Sciences Department at Canterbury Christ Church University (UK) and is a regular presenter with the BCS Better Mapping Seminars and other BCS events.
