The Police Service of Northern Ireland’s purpose is to make Northern Ireland safer for everyone through professional, progressive policing. We achieve this goal through policing with the community. This proactive, community-driven approach sees the police and local community working together to identify and solve problems.
Mapping Section form part of the Scientific Support Branch of Crime Operations Department in PSNI. They attend about 800 scenes of Serious Crime & Serious Road Traffic Collisions each year.
Based at Police Headquarters, Belfast they produce cartographic products for use by police, the courts and other government departments in the prevention, investigation and detection of serous crime.
As well as Mapping Section; Scientific Support Branch consists of CSI, Fingerprint, Photographic and Weapons/ Explosives Intelligence Specialists.
PSNI Departments use mapping in a number of GIS systems with data supplied by Land & Property Services (NI). Mapping Section are custodians of this Mapbase for PSNI.
The Section also produces cartographic products for event, operational and emergency planning. This includes intelligence & counter-terrorism work.
PSNI have been corporate members of The BCS since September 2009.
