For the first time the Symposium included a FREE to attend workshop for secondary school students on mapping disasters. This is part of the BCS outreach programme to schools and was kindly sponsored by ESRI UK, a world leader in GIS technologies and Global Mapping.

Schools Workshop: Restless Earth - Mapping Natural Disasters

Restless Earth is a preconference workshop for year 10 students from local schools, demonstrating how maps are an essential part of our daily lives.
Two sessions will allow over 30 students to attend a practical workshop on mapping natural disasters.

focus on recent earthquake in Haiti and the problems in dealing with the aftermath of such a disaster
practical activities in creating mapping to assist aid workers reach the victims
introduction to the importance of good map design
integrating mapmaking with GIS technology

The workshop ran twice between 09:30 to 11:00 and then at 11:30 to 13:00.

This workshop has now been further developed and is run as part of The BCS outreach programme - more information can be seen here
