The British Cartographic Society and Alasdair Macleod, Head of Enterprise and Resources at Royal Geographical Society with IBG, would like to invite you to see iconic highlights from the Collections in the Foyle Reading Room at 7.00pm on Thursday 25th November 2010.
The RGS holds one of the world’s pre-eminent geographical collections. Around 2 million items strong, the Collections provide an unparalleled resource tracing 500 years of geographical discovery and research.
The artefacts collection includes over a thousand items - cultural objects from around the world paraphernalia of exploration, eg: oxygen sets used in the various attempts on Everest
personal items formerly belonging to some of the world’s greatest explorers, such as Shackleton’s Burberry helmet
The visit to the collections will be followed by drinks and canapés in the Main Hall and is an ideal opportunity to catch up with old friends and colleagues.
Entries for the National Geographic Society New MapMaker Award will be on display during the evening and the presentation to the winner will be made by Rebecca Hill of NGS.
