Content: A small number of historic maps of Essex and of the local area (l6th-2Oth centuries), including Chapman & Andre's Map of Essex (1777) and a copy of A Map of the Royal Liberty of Havering (ca.1618).

The Reference Department of the Valence Library itself (Tel: 0181-592-6537) has a collection of mainly OS maps, current and historic, of the local area.

Also a collection of aerial photographs (several dates).

Pre-1900 restrictions on photocopying and OS copyright restrictions.

Content: Most of the historically important county maps of Kent from 1575 onwards (original or reproductions), including copies of the surveyors' drawings (1799) for the OS map of Kent (1801). OS 1:10,560/1:10,000 (1870s to date) and 1:2,500 (1860s to date) for the area. Miscellaneous transport and public utilities plans, including originals of Town Planning Applications.

Special collections include the local Tithe Map and Apportionments and the Enclosure Award and Maps. Also many important estate plans are held in the archive collection especially for Hall Place and Dawson Estates.

Photocopier and microfilm reader available.

Note: Current editions of the OS 1:1,250 are housed in the Reference Library, Townley Road, Bexleyheath.

Content: Small local collection, the major part of which is OS 1:2,500 maps (1860s to 1960s); county maps of Middlesex (16th-19th centuries); estate, enclosure and tithe maps and plans; municipal planning maps; several suburban London atlases (ca.1900-1910); and an 18th century pocket globe.

Content: Approx. 2,300 items, including maps and plans of the borough and, to a lesser extent, of Kent, southeast London and Surrey. OS maps (various scales and editions), together with Geological Survey and land use maps, form a large part of the collection. There are also tithe and estate plans, rights-of-way and administrative maps.

About 200 early OS maps have been put onto microfilm. There are also Reference Books to some of the early OS 1:2,500 sheets, Tithe Apportionment books and Geological Memoirs, as well as aerial photographs for the borough.

Content: The Centre holds approximately 3,000 catalogued sheets of maps and plans. Many more are located in special collections and in parish and council archives.

The collection includes reproductions of early London maps, together with other street plans of London, Ordnance Survey maps, parish maps, bomb damage maps, Goad insurance plans, street and district maps, sale catalogue plans and architectural drawings.

Content: Approximately 2,000 maps and plans, including OS of the Borough (1801, 1869, 1897, 1916, 1948 [partial coverage] and 1955 to date) at 1: 10,560, 1: 2500 and 1: 1250, depending on date.
In addition, various maps and plans (manuscript, printed or photographic copies) dating from the seventeenth century to the present day. Among them:- Grove's map of Greenwich 1660, Barker's plan of Woolwich 1749, Holmes' survey of Eltham 1749, Tithe maps 1839 - 1846, the Gossett plans of Woolwich 1853, LCC plans based on Ordnance Survey 1937.
