Content: Circa 4,000 printed and 500 manuscript maps and atlases of Berkshire, including estate plans, enclosure and tithe maps, and early OS large scale plans. Some 18th century mapping of India.
Publications include A Catalogue of Inclosure Maps in the Berkshire Record Office comp. by P. Walne (out of print).

We have published a CD of the 1st edition OS 6 inch survey for Berkshire, that is available for sale via BRO, and constructed a website of Parliamentary enclosures for Berkshire at www.berkshirenclosure.org.uk.

There will be further restrictions in opening hours and availability of some items, followed by a period of complete closure, as part of preparations for the move to the new Library of Birmingham, due to open in September, 2013. Content – general map collection: c. 55,000 atlases and sheet maps (about half of which cover Birmingham and the West Midlands). Collection includes: extensive Ordnance Survey coverage of the British Isles (larger scales mainly for Birmingham/West Midlands area, but including non-current 1:10,000 or 1:10,560 National Grid sheets for whole of Great Britain). Recent 1:1,250/1:2,500 and 1:10,000 printouts for Birmingham only. 35 18th century atlases.

Skett collection of c.4,000 sheet maps (Ordnance Survey 1:10,560, 1:25,000 and 1:63,360 maps, and 18th and 19th century printed maps, mainly British).

Wide range of general maps, British and foreign; mainly non-current.

Content: Circa 5,000 OS maps, 1845 to date, relating to the Bolton area, various scales and editions. Bolton 1:1,056 (1882). Manuscript maps and plans relating principally to Bolton and southeast Lancashire (including estates, enclosures, turnpike roads, industry, collieries, public buildings, etc.), 1620-1950.

Collections include ALBINSON COLLECTION (1,380 items ca.1700-1850); THOMPSON COLLECTION (2,924 items 1620-1950); LADYSHORE COLLIERY COMPANY RECORDS (300 maps 1835-1950); and RAILWAY COMPANY RECORDS (186 items 1848-1910) for which typescript lists are available. Small collection of aerial photographs relating to the Bolton area.

Special collections include plans of estates and collieries in Somerset, Gloucestershire, etc. owned by the Smyth family of Ashton Court (17-20th centuries); maps and plans of J.P. Sturge & Sons (Surveyors), chiefly of Somerset and Gloucestershire (18-20th centuries).
