Content: Circa 350 maps of East Lothian. All of OS 1:10,560 (1854 edition and 1950-80) for East Lothian and Inveresk/Musselburgh; all of OS 1:2,500 East Lothian and Inveresk/Musselburgh, most of 1:2,500 (1907 edition); some other large scale OS maps. Town plans; estate maps; county maps (16th-19th centuries) and thematic maps. Holds the only known copy of Wood's Plan of Dunbar.

Special collection of coal mining maps in the DAVID SPENCE ARCHIVE.

Publishes facsimile reprints of:

  • Wood's Plan of Dunbar (1830) and his Plan of Haddington (1819) [out of print].
  • Plan of Battle of Prestonpans (1745). Hay's plan of Musselburgh (1824). Sketch of village of Tranent (1797).

Circa 2,800 local maps and plans. Historical maps from the 16th century; town plans and estate maps from the 18th century; railway and boundary maps from the 19th century. OS maps from 1852 to date (all scales). Geological survey maps (1:10,560). Current shopping centre plans.
About 500 aerial photographs of Edinburgh are also kept in the Edinburgh Room.

Scottish Library
Circa 3,000 sheets, including 17th century (e.g. Mercator 1630, and Pont 1654). OS maps of Scotland (1855 to date, including 1:1,250).
A set of current OS 1:50,000 of Scotland is available for both reference and loan.

Reference Library
OS maps for Great Britain at 1:50,000 and for other European countries at scales ranging from 1:100,000 to 1:250,000. UK and International street plans.
A reader/printer is available for copying historical maps on aperture cards. There is no photocopier.

Content: Falkirk Museums is the archive repository for Falkirk Council. Maps and plans include OS maps of various scales and editions for Falkirk district, including 1:500 1st edition; 18th-20th century estate maps and plans for Callendar Estates and some other estates, and plan collection for the Dean of Guild Courts of Bo'ness, Denny & Dunipace, Falkirk, Grangemouth and Falkirk portion of Stirling County, 1880's-1975.

Also collection of ship plans.
