Content: Circa 20,000 maps, including OS of Great Britain at 1:50,000; England and Wales at 1:10,000 and 1:25,000; Administrative areas maps of England. Sea fisheries atlas of the British Isles.

Photocopying & photography available. Production of mapping, traditional and computer generated, for specific requirements (i.e. GIS).

Content: The Dallas Pratt Collection of Historical Maps contains over 200 maps and prints from the Age of Discovery. The collection is divided mainly between early printed world maps and maps relating to the early exploration of the New World, but there are a few manuscript maps, the earliest dating from the twelfth century.

Facilities: About fifty items are on view at a time in the Map Room of the Exhibition Gallery. There is a library containing approximately 350 volumes on renaissance exploration and cartography.

A photocopier is available.

The MUSEUM is open every day during the summer and every day except Mondays in winter, but access to THE RESOURCE COLLECTION (which includes maps) is by prior arrangement only Mon-Fri (all year).

Content: Circa 500 early edition OS 1:10,560 and 1:2,500 plans, and several other town maps.

The large photographic archive at present being put onto a LASER disc system.

Content: Approx. 55,000 maps and 200 atlases forming an extensive world-wide geological, topographic, hydrologic and thematic coverage of relevance to hydrocarbon exploration.

Note: The extensive, collection of satellite imagery, satellite photography, and aerial photography has now been relocated with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC). This means that for the first time, this archive, which covers a large part of the world's oil exploration area is now available to other companies on a commercial basis. Archives Collections:
The Archives Service preserves and provides access to records created by BAS and its predecessors, Operation Tabarin (1943-45) and the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, (FIDS, 1945-61).
The records held relate both to scientific activities and administrative and logistical operations.

The UK Antarctic Map Collection consists of over 4,000 printed maps. These include topographic, hydrographical, geological, glaciological maps, etc. produced by many nations. The UK produced maps (post 1943) are of the British Antarctic Territory and South Georgia.

We also hold about 6000 manuscript maps, these comprise original survey maps and field maps annotated for different science disciplines, e.g. biology, geology, glaciology.

Survey records, aerial photographs and satellite images are also held.

The Mapping and Geographic Information Centre (MAGIC) provides maps and other geographic information to workers at BAS. It acquires topographic data in Antarctica, prepares new maps, maintains databases of digital maps, supplies printed maps to BAS staff and provides expertise in geographical analysis. MAGIC also maintains a library of Antarctic maps and aerial photographs.
