Content: A private collection of some 150 maps and architectural drawings from the 16th and early 17th centuries. Maps mostly of places in the British Isles. Collection belonged to William Cecil, 1st Lord Burghley (1520-98), and Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury (1563-1612).

Photocopies of the maps may be consulted in the British Library (Ref. Maps 186.h.1,2).

Liverpool Town Maps and Dock Estate Plans

Early maps of Liverpool date from Chadwick's map of 1725. The main focus of the collection is Liverpool & Birkenhead Dock Estate Plans from 1825 onwards. For more details see the information sheets on maps (number 46) and dock plans (number 56) on our website.

Sea Charts

The main bulk of the Sea Charts Collection is in the form of unbound miscellaneous Admiralty Charts (various 1810-1970). Also included is a large selection of local charts of Liverpool Bay 1764-1980, miscellaneous charts and a world-wide collection of bound Admiralty Charts in the records of the Liverpool Underwriters Association (D/LUA). The latter are held at our reserve store, please telephone in advance for an appointment.

Content: MLURI publishes a range of agriculture and environmentally related maps, as well as holding a number of these in digital format. MLURI publishes a full range of Scottish soil maps, from site specific surveys to national inventories, in addition we publish Land Capability for Agriculture and Forestry maps for Scotland at 1:50,000 and 1:250,000 scales. MLURI hold the original interpreted maps for the Land Cover of Scotland 1988 (1:25,000 scale). MLURI are responsible for producing a further range of related publications including a series showing the 'Assessment of climatic conditions in Scotland' as well as soil memoirs. These are available for viewing by appointmenet, or can be purchased by mail order.

Content: Substantial coverage of England at most current OS scales together with a large collection of 18th-2Oth century maps, including copies of various county, estate and tithe maps. The OS 2-inch, 3-inch and 6-inch surveyors' drawings (1789-1840s). Various OS county series editions relating to England, and material relating to the OS archaeological and historical map series.

A specialist collection of some 500,000 oblique air photographs illustrating architectural, archaeological and landscape subjects.

A general collection of some 4M vertical air photographs derived from RAF, Ordnance Survey and commercial sources, and covering the period 1929-85.

Photocopies (up to Al size) and photo reproduction can be supplied on a fixed scale of charges and subject to normal copyright restrictions.
