Content: Approx. 150,000 sheets, 800 atlases.
Topographic coverage of UK at 1:25,000 and smaller scale; 1:10,000/10,560 regional coverage; 1:2500/1:1250 local sheets.
A number of thematic map series for the UK are held, including Geological Survey and Soil Survey; also hydrogeology and geophysical, land use and land classification maps.
Historical mapping of the North West, generally, and Greater Manchester in particular, is excellent, including some pre-OS facsimiles and 1:500/1:1056 town plans of Manchester & Salford.
Special Collections housed in the Main Library building are from the Manchester Geographical Society, books and atlases AND
the Mills collection of mostly 16th-19th century maps.
There is medium scale coverage for most countries of the world.
Admiralty Charts for UK and some world coverage are available to consult.

There is a good collection of cartographic texts, map monographs gazetteers/ street indexes and atlases held in the Purple Ground area.
A wide range of electronic resources can be accessed, including the Digimap Collections - UK topographical, geology and historical.
Photocopying and scanning services are provided.

Content: Approx. 2,000 items. Mostly maps accumulated by, or commissioned by landed estates as parts of estate surveys, predominantly East Midlands. Prior to 1850 mostly manuscript maps at various scales. Other maps and charts include Canada, India, France, etc., pre-1900. A series of plans from the Trent River Authority and precessors. A large number of post-1850 OS maps, although there is no deliberate acquisition policy.

Staff-operated photocopying and photography.

The Special (Printed Book) Collections also contain some printed maps and atlases.

Special collections include the GOUGH COLLECTION of British local topography (16th to 19th centuries); and the TODHUNTER-ALLEN COLLECTION of British local topography (mainly 18th and 19th centuries). University of Oxford School of Geography map collection incorporated during 2005.

Circa 10,000 aerial photographs.

The Reading Room contains books, bibliographies and reference works on cartography and geography; numerous cartographic CD-ROM packages and mapping software. The Map Catalogue contains some 250,000 cards arranged by area, subject and mapmaker. Recent cartographic acquisitions appear on OLIS, the University's online library catalogue.

Publications include All at sea: the story of navigational charts: an exhibition to celebrate two hundred years of the Hydrographic Office (1995); The Gough Map: the earliest road map of Great Britain? (Nick Millea, 2007); Large Scale County Maps of the British Isles 1596-1850 (E.M. Rodger, 1972); Street mapping: an A-Z of urban cartography (Nick Millea, 2003); and facsimiles of the Gough Map of Great Britain (ca. 1360), the Laxton Map, the Agas Map of Oxford and Speed's Map of Oxfordshire. Also the Maplist series: A list of Ordnance Survey District Special Tourist Maps 1861-1939 and A List of Ordnance Survey Catalogues, Publications Reports & other publications (Nigel N. Content: c.2000 estate maps from the 17th to 20th centuries including mss and printed maps, and plans and drawings of Christ Church and other buildings in Oxford. Christ Church estates were extensive, and the collection includes maps from most areas of England. The full catalogue is not yet on-line, but it is hoped that this will be rectified soon.

NB. Subsequent to the building work at Christ Church between 2007 and 2009, it is hoped that the maps and plans will be back in place, and available to researchers, by New Year 2010.
