Content: Circa 75 000 map sheets shelved on closed access; many atlases and gazetteers shelved as part of the Library's stock. World-wide coverage, but with emphasis on the British Isles and Western Europe. Mainly topographical, with a secondary emphasis on geological maps. Good collection of older atlases. GB: Complete modern O.S. coverage at 1:50 000 and 1:25 000. Comprehensive historical coverage at 1:63 360 for whole country, and southern England for larger scales. Some pre-1900 non-O.S. maps and facsimiles for Reading and Berkshire. Varied collection of thematic maps, including geology, soils and land use series.

Circa 6 000 air photographs, mostly Reading and Berkshire. Some foreign sets eg Tunisia, Norway.

Black and white photocopying and A3 scanner is available. Illuminated table available.

Content: The University has a large number of special collections of rare books, archives, manuscripts and other materials, including maps. They may be consulted by members of the public as well as members of the University.

Notable collections include the Stenton Library which contains a number of 17th and 18th century atlases and road books, and a nearly complete cased set of early 1:63,360 OS Old Series (or 1st Edition) maps.

Archival collections, which include manuscript (and some printed) maps related to the estates of Stratfield Saye (FR WELLINGTON), Eynsham Hall (FR OXF 21) and the Orsett Estate in Essex (FR ESS 3 and 17). Other holdings range from maps included in the records of individual farms, to single enclosure and printed country maps, and maps found in the archives of organisations such as the Council for the Protection of Rural England (SR CPRE) and the Open Spaces Society (SR OSS).

Some 750 manuscript geology maps of southern England by Prof. H.L. Hawkins (MS 5324) are also held.

A full range of facilities, including photocopying, photography, lockers and a visitor's room are available.

Content: Circa 22,000 sheets. Comprehensive topographic and thematic coverage for UK. Good large scale collection covering Lancashire and Cheshire with particular emphasis on Greater Manchester (this includes a very useful historic collection). Considerable holdings of west and east Africa topographic maps - somewhat dated now. Small coverage of west Europe and Scandinavia (mainly 1970's and 1980's). General small scale maps for rest of the world.

Content: It comprises a good collection of British maps. The whole of the country is covered at a scale of 1:25,000 and 1:50,000. Larger scale maps are available for local areas (North Derbyshire, South Yorkshire) at a scale of 1:2,500 and 1:10,000. Maps at a scale of 1:500 and 1:1,250 are available for the Sheffield area only. There is a wide range of historical maps (mainly 1850’s onwards).

Aerial photos covering Sheffield and Rotherham for 1992 are stocked.

The Library stocks a good range of atlases and gazetteers which can be used in conjunction with the maps.

The collection is reference only and photocopying facilities are available (subject to copyright).It is advisable for visitors to ring the library before making a special visit, maps are retrieved by library staff allowing 24 hours notice and will be available by 10.30. Monday –  Friday.
