The BCS Award Winners 2009
The British Cartographic Society Awards were recently announced at the Annual Symposium in Newport Pagnell, on Thursday 18th June, 2009.
The following awards for 2009 were presented.

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC SOCIETY NEW MAPMAKER AWARD
This award has been developed to encourage those starting out in cartographic or related industries as students or new employees in commercial firms or government. It is run with the continuing support of the National Geographic Society.
WINNER
Christoph Hoesli, Institute of Goegraphy at the University of Bern (Switzerland)
Southern Sudan Topographic Base Map Series: Map Sheet E - Eastern Equatorial.

HENRY JOHNS CARTOGRAPHIC JOURNAL AWARD
Since 1975 the BCS has presented an award to the author of the most outstanding article published in The Cartographic Journal as judged by the editorial board. The award is sponsored by Lovell Johns and is named after Colonel Henry Johns who founded the company in 1965 as a traditional cartographic service company primarily serving the mapping needs of map publishers.
WINNER
Jarke J van Wijk, Professor of Visualisation at Technische Universiteit Eindhoven
The winning article appeared in volume 45 issue 1 and is titled “Unfolding the Earth: Myriahedral Projections”.

AVENZA AWARD FOR ELECTRONIC MAPPING
The Avenza Award is open to entries designed and created for electronic format. This year, qualifying entries included Web-based products, CD-Roms, presentations and databased derived mapping.
The judges have decided to present two Commendations.

THE STANFORDS AWARD FOR PRINTED MAPPING
The Stanfords Award is open to any mapping in the printed form, whether it be a poster, leaflet, folded sheet map, atlas or page from a book.
Once again this proved a popular award with numerous entries for the judges to consider. Final deliberations gave not only a winner but also two highly commended certificates and one commended certificate for presentation.

The Ordnance Survey MasterMap award is to encourage innovative and stimulating map products derived from, and composed mainly of, Ordnance Survey's MasterMap data. The award is run with the support of Ordnance Survey.

The British Cartographic Society (BCS) was founded in 1963 to promote the better compilation, use and understanding of maps, in all their forms. As part of its charitable aims the BCS undertakes to promote an understanding of the principles of cartography, encourage greater awareness of the importance of maps and to encourage their wider use.
As a learned society, the BCS provides its members with a journal and newsletter as well as opportunities for increasing their own awareness and skills through its programme of events, including the annual symposium.
