The British Cartographic Society Annual Symposium 2010
Opens its Doors to All Mapping Enthusiasts

The British Cartographic Society (BCS) Annual Symposium 2010 will open its doors on Wednesday 9 until Saturday 12 June 2010 at the Village Hotel and Conference Centre in Nottingham.

The BCS Annual Symposium 2010, “Talking with Maps”, provides an ideal forum for the geospatial community to learn from mapping experts, communicate innovate projects and exchange ideas with others. This is the UK’s major event bringing together mapmakers, map users and other mapping enthusiasts from academic, private and government organisations.

As with previous years, delegates can choose to attend all or part of the event which kicks off with Special Interest Group meetings scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. The GIS and Design Group have already confirmed their presence and further details on these meetings will be announced in due course.

The main conference programme commences on Thursday morning and continues through to Friday afternoon. It offers an outstanding line up of speakers addressing a broad spectrum of the mapping-based interests from both commercial and academic perspectives. Talks are organised into themed sessions that include: cartographic representation, thematic mapping, visualisation of place, and maps in the media.

An excellent collection of interactive workshops interspersed throughout the two days will discuss some of the latest technologies and geographic data being used today. These 90-minute sessions include: better mapping for the terrified, making sense of statistics on maps, high quality map output from UKMap and making the most of OS MasterMap.

The event also includes a supporting exhibition, numerous opportunities to network as well as the highly esteemed annual awards ceremony and gala dinner.

Peter Jones, BCS’ Chair of Programme Committee, comments: “The BCS Symposium welcomes and supports a wide variety of groups with an interest in maps, whether they are members or non-members of the Society. By including both scientific and industrial players within the fields of cartography and GIS this event continues to provide an invaluable educational experience for everyone”.

For those staying on Saturday morning there is an optional visit to the immersive 3D Visualisation Facility at the BGS’ Keyworth HQ. This is one of the UK’s finest geoscience visualisation resources, heavily used by BGS scientists, and is invaluable in helping to communicate BGS research to other geoscientists as well as commercial clients.

Delegates are encouraged to book early for the Symposium. An early bird discount is available for bookings received by 7 May 2010. Event information can be found at www.cartography.org.uk/symposium

The BCS Symposium is organised by Training4GIS, the training and consultancy division of The GeoInformation Group.
