Major names gather for two-day live event 16 and 17 October 2010 The Serpentine Gallery presents the fifth event in its acclaimed Marathon series on 16 and 17 October. The multi-dimensional Map Marathon will feature non-stop live presentations by over 50 artists, poets, writers, philosophers, scholars, musicians, architects, designers and scientists. Curated by Serpentine Gallery Co-Director Hans Ulrich Obrist, the ambitious two-day event takes place in London during Frieze Art Fair week.
The Serpentine Gallery Map Marathon will bring together an unprecedented group from diverse fields to showcase possible maps for the coming decade. The Map Marathon will explore all forms of mapping, of data, space and time, multiple dimensions, language and the body.
The Map Marathon will uncover the influence and possibilities of mapping in our world today. Participations include a tableau vivant by Luigi Ontani, and presentations of maps by international artists Marina Abramovi!, Julieta Aranda, Michael Craig-Martin, Gilbert & George and Rirkrit Tiravanija. The event will also feature explorations of mapping by architect David Adjaye and astronomer Dimitar Sasselov, writer Russell Hoban, as well as musical performances by legendary artists, including Genesis P-Orridge.
The Internet has brought maps of every kind into our daily lives. Maps have become easier to create, change, develop collaboratively and share. Depicting geographical areas, mindscapes and digital realms alike, these multidimensional maps express endlessly interconnected ideas and issues.
