A couple of years ago I downloaded a pile of the NASA SRTM data files and the software utilities to convert these into contour maps in a choice of output files. They seemed to work very well indeed for building the topographical layer of new maps.
I've now gone back to find the info is still available but the files look very different in .avg .dt0 .max .min file types for each degree square. I'll be getting into this next week but does anyone have experience of working with these files and the utilities needed to convert them into a usable .shp file or similar georeferenced format?
Thanks for any info.
