After several years of working in cooperation and a number of successful joint events, the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) and the British Cartographic Society (BCS) have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This was signed by BCS President Bob Lilley and AGI Chief Executive Officer Chris Holcroft on 25th November 2010 in London.

Both BCS and AGI recognise the value of a strong collective professional voice in the user and supplier community to influence change and promote the importance of cartography and geographical information for the benefit of all members. Within the memorandum both parties identified a number of action items to be coordinated and implemented. These encompass joint activity on events, responses to government policy consultations, coordinated communication processes and reciprocal membership benefits.

“AGI has worked with BCS very successfully in recent years and there is a lot to be gained from joint and coordinated activity based on mutual respect and leverage of our respective skills. A lot of what we can do together will benefit our members who often find themselves engaged in activities served by both our membership organisations. We believe the MoU is a natural step for us to take and look forward to this being a success” said Chris Holcroft AGI Chief Executive Officer.

“I’m delighted to have formalised our successful relationship with the AGI. The success of our previous joint ventures demonstrates how collaboration between our organisations can be so influential in furthering the interest of our members and in promoting the value of geographic information and cartography” said Bob Lilley, BCS President.

The AGI, by way of its unique membership forum, brings together this previously disparate GI community to share ideas on best practice, experience and innovation, and offers access to unparalleled networking opportunities with significant business benefits. Since its formal inception in 1989, it has built up a significant membership base of over 2000 named members and established itself as the respected voice in GI.
