| Delegates Applaud Better Mapping Training Seminar
16 December 2010
Following the Better Mapping II training seminar held in November 2010, The British Cartographic Society (BCS) in conjunction with the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) has received excellent feedback from delegates who benefited from their attendance at the event.
More than 50 delegates registered at this seminar that took place in London on 24 November. The Better Mapping seminars are run as part of The British Cartographic Society’s ongoing mission to share their knowledge and skills with mapmakers in the discipline of Cartography. Better Mapping II, the next level, provided the audience with a more in-depth look at aspects of mapmaking.
From the feedback received, 100% of delegates noted that they would recommend the seminar to their colleagues. Comments from the evaluation forms and Twitter included: “Continue to promote this kind of workshop”, “Lots of new approaches tried and good interaction with delegates”, “Very useful symbology & basic cartography advice” and “Long live cartography!”
The day offered teaching sessions by expert presenters that were supplemented by interactive workshop-style sessions and open discussion where delegates examined a selection of maps to discuss their effectiveness in communicating their intended message.
“Appreciating the importance of cartography is an essential prerequisite for everyone involved in creating maps to ensure that they convey the right message”, comments Mary Spence MBE, Past-President of The British Cartographic Society. “I believe this seminar successfully provided delegates with a unique opportunity to receive helpful advice through case studies and real life examples that will equip them with the skills they need to help improve the quality, accuracy and effectiveness of their digital and hard copy maps”.
Future events, at which to gain further mapping knowledge, include:
Better Mapping Belfast on 24th March 2011 that will be hosted by OSNI and will teach basic principles of mapmaking plus interactive elements and discussions.
The British Cartographic Society Symposium in June 2011 that will be staged in Cheshire under the theme “The Power of the Image”. This event will offer delegates an additional chance to gain hands-on mapping knowledge from a wide range of world-class presentations and interactive workshops.
