46th British Cartographic Society Symposium Explores Mapping at Work
Last Remaining Places Available to hear distinguished speakers and informative special interest sessions address issues important to everyone using maps.
Professionals and academics interested in extending their knowledge of current cartographic practices and the latest mapping technologies are invited to attend The British Cartographic Society Annual Symposium: Mapping at Work to be held 17 – 20 June 2009 at Newport Pagnell near Milton Keynes.
Mapping at Work 2009 is open to everyone, including non members of the Society, and will begin on the afternoon of Wednesday 17 June with a session delivered by two of the Society’s Special Interest Groups. The Design Group and GIS Group will deliver a focused session on improving map design and cartographic output. This comprehensive session is designed specifically for GI professionals wishing to gain further experience of cartographic design and output for presentations, publications and the internet.
The main conference held on Thursday 18 and Friday 19 June will include a fascinating mix of presentations and interactive workshops from business professionals and academics. The themes will cover New Horizons, Mapping the Environment, Mapping on the Web and Symbology and Representation. Workshops offer a choice of topics including; Making the Most of OS MasterMap, Geological 3D Mapping and Thermal Mapping. The Helen Wallis Memorial lecture will be delivered by Barbara Bond, Pro-Chancellor of University of Plymouth who will ask ‘Communicating with maps: Did the message get across?’
All delegates at The British Cartographic Society Symposium 2009 will be eligible to receive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points that can be used towards securing or retaining their Chartered Geographer (GIS) status.

Mapping at work 2009 also includes the annual gala dinner and awards ceremony. Awards are presented in the following categories:

o Stanfords Award, for Printed Mapping
o Avenza Award, for Electronic Mapping
o John C. Bartholomew Award, for Small Scale Mapping
o OS MasterMap Award, for 'Better Mapping'
• The Society Medal for distinguished contribution to Cartography
• The Henry Johns Award for the Best Cartographic Journal Article
• The National Geographic Society New Mapmaker Award for those starting out in cartographic or related industries.
• The UKHO Junior Mapmaker Award to encourage map making at primary and secondary school level.
The usual favourites and networking activities are also included; an optional visit to the MOD Military Intelligence Museum at Chicksands to view rare historic maps, a Ceilidh and the Design Group Quiz.
