12 June 2013Black Country ExperienceA Black Country Experience

Day 1: Canals
Day 2: Glass
As part of its 50th anniversary celebrations, the British Cartographic Society is organising a two day trip to the Black Country in July to sample the best the area has to offer. Local writer and broadcaster, Graham Fisher MBE, will escort you through an exploration of the area’s industrial heritage - from the first canals built for transportation of mineral ores to the manufacturing of glass, its demise and the rise of artisan glassmaking.
Whilst several locations will be offering their hosting services in house, much of the two days will be conducted by Graham Fisher MBE. Graham is a specialist in inland waterways (awarded an MBE in 2004 for services to the inland waterways) and an ambassador for the Stourbridge Glass industry. He has made extensive enquiries into the links between the two and has written books on the subject. He is thus ideally placed to act as our guide.
Accommodation is provided at the 4* Copthorne Hotel, Merry Hill where a welcome drink and evening meal awaits you on arrival on Thursday evening. An early start on Friday heralds a day of exploration of the inland waterways of the Black Country and a visit to Dudley Archives whereas Saturday concentrates on the glass industry.
Please see the flyer and programme for full details of the visits and experiences on offer.
If you have any particular enquiries about any aspect of this event please contact Mary Spence MBE on 01497 831453 or email Mary
And don't forget - registration is limited to 30 delegates and closes on 21st June.
