Officers of Council

Richard Carpenter

President

Richard had a forty-year career at the UK Hydrographic Office before retiring in 2019. Within the Society, he has previously been chair of the Membership Committee and Vice President.

Beyond cartography, Richard is actively involved in his local church and is chair of governors for a local primary school.

Martin Lubikowski

Vice President

Martin has worked as a cartographer since 1975. After gaining experience with several companies, including with BP as a Senior Cartographer, he started his own business in 1983. He brings together skills in cartography, graphic design and photography, with clients including publishers, government departments and large corporations.

David Sherren

Honorary Secretary

David is Map Librarian at the University of Portsmouth, where he has worked since 1987. He also provides copyright advice to staff and students across the institution. He is a Fellow of the BCS and has been Secretary since 2016. He is also a member of the Map Curators’ Group.

Seppe Cassettari

Honorary Treasurer

Seppe was founder and CEO of The GeoInformation Group before it was acquired in 2016 by Verisk Inc. He retired in 2019 after a career spanning the Ministry of Defence, Kingston University and Pearson plc. He is working on a mapping project with the V&A Museum and in a GIS training programme for real estate managers. He is a previous President of the BCS.

David Forrest

Jim Goldsmith

Awards Officer

Jim Goldsmith started his career at Ordnance Survey in 1978 as a cartographic assistant. He has been actively involved in the creation/revision/representation of geographical information across many of the scales of mapping, his current role is Senior Production Manager Cartography. He officially joined the BCS council in 2017.

John Peaty

Convener of the Historical Military Mapping Group

John is the International Secretary of the British Commission for Military History, and also serves on the Council of the Society for Army Historical Research. He is a founder member of the Royal Air Force Historical Society and a life member of the Institute of Historical Research. He works for the Ministry of Defence.

Elaine Watts

Chair of Membership Committee

Elaine is the cartographer at the University of Nottingham. She has been a member of BCS since 2008 and currently chairs the Membership Committee. Here, she utilises her links within the higher education sector, the Geographical Association and the Royal Geographical Society.

Judith Fox

Acting Editor of Cartographiti

Judith has worked at the University of Reading since 1989, initially as Assistant Map Curator in the Geography Department, and since 2004 (when the map collection moved to the Library) as Map Librarian in the Academic Liaison Librarian team. She has been acting editor of Cartographiti since 2019.

Dr Alexander Kent

Editor of The Cartographic Journal

Alex, a past president of the Society, is Reader in Cartography and Geographic Information Science at Canterbury Christ Church University. He is also on the committee of the Charles Close Society and is a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. Previously, he was a geospatial consultant for a range of clients.

Caroline Robinson

Caroline Robinson

Senior Editor of Maplines

Caroline Robinson has been submitting articles to Maplines magazine since 2012. In her role as Senior Editor, she has been instrumental in bringing the Society’s magazine up to date, driving up the quality of the writing and increasing circulation. Caroline works for a Canadian software engineering company in the Hague, as GIS Training Lead. She also runs Clear Mapping Co, a cartographic design company based in Cornwall, UK.

Jennifer Johnston

Restless Earth Workshop Coordinator

Jennifer is a freelance cartographer under the business name Inspirit Cartographics. She has a BA (Hons) in Geography and Fine Art, a postgraduate degree in GIS specialising in cartographic design and 10 years of professional experience. She got her start with the Atlas of Canada, Lonely Planet and Explore Australia.

Peter Jolly

Awards Archivist

Peter left the Royal Air Force as a Wing Commander in 1994 after 31 years. He then spent 18 years with Esri, specialising in cartography. He is a Past President of both IMIA and BCS and currently is a volunteer in the Bodleian Library Map Room archiving entries for BCS awards.
