The David Rumsey Map Center (The Center) is seeking a full-time Technology Librarian to manage the Center’s user facing software and hardware; support its exhibitions and event programming, and manage the libraries’ map scanning operations. The Center’s collections include the David Rumsey Map Collection, Maps of Africa, Glen McLaughlin’s collection of Maps of California as an Island, and other historic maps and atlases. The Center is a world class facility that collocates physical items and their digital surrogates allowing researchers to display and interrogate them in multiple ways adding unique value to the scholarship of cartographic material. The Center boasts large high resolution video walls, a touch screen and Oculus rifts as well and a flexible space to support its programs and has one of the highest number of maps available online in high resolution in the world. In addition to being a teaching and event space, the Center has large areas to display maps and atlases in which two map related exhibitions are mounted a year. The Center is deeply engaged in collecting, cataloging, scanning, and providing access to the rare physical items and its digital collections in interesting and innovative ways.
The person in this position will work closely with the Head to ensure the smooth running of the technology in the Center, assist in the creation of exhibition related content and physical supports, and manage the map scanning program. The incumbent will serve on a team that coordinates and conducts map events and conferences.
● Maintain and manage the user facing center technology, including software and hardware, its upkeep, and engage in training to troubleshoot technical issues.
● Keep up on user facing technology across different disciplines with an eye towards adapting them to leverage cartographic resources.
● Serves as project manager for the A/V technology, including upgrades, and modifications to the Center’s installation(s).
● Trouble-shoot and make minor repairs on a wide variety of audio, visual, and computer equipment; take the lead with our vendors to rectify issues.
● Support the outreach and exhibition programs at the Center by creating graphical materials including printing facsimiles, posters, and publicity materials; developing supports for the exhibit items; and designing layouts for the displays using graphics software.
● Manage the production, post-production, and distribution of videos created at the Center.
● Manage the workflow for the creation of digital map content in the digitization lab. This includes facilitating the movement of materials in and out of the lab; managing donor materials; assisting in metadata remediation; and oversee quality control for map content.
● Acquire and keep up with technical skills required for the digital imaging workflows and scanning equipment as it relates to cartographic and oversized materials.
● Facilitate the management of digital cartographic content from third party donors or purchases.
● Trains, supervises, and directs the work of students, temp/casual employees hired for specific projects.
● Assist patrons and staff with reference and research inquiries by searching shelves, files and electronic resources.
● Provide information on library activities, facilities, rules and services to patrons
Education & Experience:
Advanced Degree in Library Science or advanced degree in a relevant academic discipline with demonstrated understanding of academic libraries or a combination of education and relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
● Demonstrated experience in managing large display screen arrays and flat screen technology.
● Advanced technical experience in computer equipment to run arrays, other media equipment, and/or digital media control software.
● Demonstrated ability to perform repairs on a wide variety of audio, visual and computer equipment.
● Ability to adapt equipment setup and provide alternative setup or workarounds if necessary.
● Demonstrated experience in project management, including ability to manage a variety of simultaneous projects within tight deadlines, excellent organizational and time management skills.
● Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and diplomacy required to interact effectively with and provide customer service to a broad audience.
● Ability to work independently as well as effectively in a collaborative team environment.
● May require experience planning, coordinating, and executing archival digitization projects.
● Maintain project documentation, issue status reports, quarterly production statistics and track daily progress.
● Effective problem solving, analytical and organizational skills.
● Strong knowledge in production techniques including videography, compression and file delivery and other production formats. (desired)
● Broad knowledge of all aspects of professional quality productions, including field and studio camera, lighting, sound and editing. (desired)
● Demonstrated experience in scanning rare materials and ingesting digital materials into the pipeline for searching and viewing in library catalogs (desired).
● Experience and familiarity with best practices in the handling of rare materials (desired).
● Ability to present a portfolio that reflects creative work including demonstrated experience in graphics software (desired).
• Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
• Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasps lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
• Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other).
• Rarely use a telephone, operate hand controls.
• Must be able to push and maneuver a fully-loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 50 pounds.
