North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers

Circa 50,000 items. The extensive collection includes 17th, 18th and 19th century hand drawn estate, area, geological and mining maps and plans, with particular emphasis on Northumberland and Durham covering the Great North Coalfield and North Pennines, including the London Lead Company plans and records. Extensive collection of railway and waggonways plans. Extensive collection of early OS sheets of Great Britain covering several editions. Extensive minerals and royalties leases plans and maps. Line and signalling plans of NER from North Eastern Railways Association. Colliery and seam plans from within the Great North Coalfield. Geological map collection includes from first edition UK onwards. Maps from other areas of the world.

Collection is being exhaustively catalogued, over 15,000 catalogue entries available and on-line at www.mininginstitute.org.uk The remainder of the collection will be continuously added over the next 2 years (by 2014).

Opening hours

Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, except Bank Holidays, closed Christmas Eve – New Year.

Access

Library is reference only, non-members are very welcome to visit the Library and browse.
To assist researchers, visits outside normal hours may be made by appointment and the person to contact with enquiries is Jennifer Kelly on 0191 2332459.
Non-members are currently charged a £3 research fee to use the collections.

Facilities

Photocopying available. Cameras are permitted, fees apply. Copying and scan facilities are available up to A3, larger sizes are also available but two weeks should be allowed for larger copies and scans.
