Restless Earth Coordinator
Are you looking for a fantastic opportunity to inspire young people to explore the world of cartography and discover how maps make a real-world impact?

The British Cartographic Society is looking for a new Restless Earth Coordinator working as a consultant under contract. The Restless Earth workshop is a disaster relief mapping workshop, looking at the Japanese earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear disaster of 2011. A second scenario looking at the 2023 earthquake in Türkiye has been started but had not yet been released.

The workshop goes through basic cartographic principles, symbology, and how to create maps for emergency crews. The students work in teams of five, taking on the roles of Humanitarian, Search & Rescue, Military, Medical and a Coordinator to create a large scale and small scale map of the affected area. The workshop is for up to 75 pupils and it will take approximately two hours per session. Two sessions can be fitted into a school day.

Key Responsibilities:
-
Respond to emails and general enquiries related to the workshop
-
Promote upcoming workshops and encourage participation
-
Prepare and maintain workshop materials before and after each session
-
Maintain a shared calendar and coordinate with admin staff
-
Keep an up-to-date volunteer list and send out volunteer callouts well in advance of each workshop
Workshop Duties:
-
Arrive at least 20 minutes before the first workshop to check in at reception and set up for the day
-
Begin each session with an instructional PowerPoint presentation
-
Support students during the hands-on mapping activity, answering questions and providing guidance
-
Help keep students focused and on-task throughout the session
-
Break tasks into manageable chunks to support student engagement and learning
-
Allow teachers to handle any disciplinary issues or requests for toilet breaks
-
Oversee the end-of-session presentations, where student groups share their maps (presentations should be brief - 1 to 2 minutes)
-
Judge the completed maps with volunteers based on accuracy, cartographic design, clarity, teamwork, and presentation quality
-
Award a small prize to the winning group; their maps (or copies) will be submitted to the national competition in September
Additional Information:
-
The contract has a value of £600 (excl VAT) per month, payable on presentation of a suitable invoice
-
The British Cartographic Society will reimburse travel expenses (e.g., petrol or economy rail tickets)

-
preparing and distributing the Minutes
-
drafting agendas
-
preparing the Trustees Annual Report and Accounts
